This week, Namecheap released a report showing the top-level domains that are most popular with customers in 2024. As the year is coming to an end, the leaders in new registrations are clear at a glance.
In terms of new registrations, the performance of each domain name is as follows:
1. .com, with 3,661,899 registrations;
2. .shop, with 721,532 registrations;
3. .xyz, with 519,800 registrations;
4. .site, with 371,021 registrations;
5. .org, with 323,537 registrations.

(Top 15 gTLDs and Top 15 ccTLDs in 2024)
Among them, the first-year registration prices of .shop, .xyz and .site are relatively cheap. Generally speaking, there is an inverse relationship between registration costs and renewal rates. Among Namecheap's top 10 domain names, only .com (32%) and .org (36%) have outstanding renewal rates.
In terms of renewal rate, the top five domain names are relatively expensive, as follows:
1..dev, renewal rate is 57%;
2..ca, renewal rate is 54%;
3..app, renewal rate is 47%;
4..io, renewal rate is 46%;
5..gg, renewal rate is 45%.

From these data, we can see that the .com domain name is far ahead in new registrations due to its long-term high popularity and wide commercial recognition, and is the mainstream choice in the market.
New domain names such as .shop and .xyz have attracted many new users to register at low prices, but their renewal rates are not satisfactory.
On the contrary, high-priced domain names such as .dev and .ca have a higher renewal rate. This shows that when users choose domain names, they not only consider the initial registration cost, but also pay more attention to the long-term value, professional image and adaptability of the domain name to their own business development.
For enterprises and website operators, when choosing a domain name, they should consider multiple factors such as registration volume, renewal rate, registration price and the degree of fit with their own business, so as to make a scientific and reasonable decision.
