According to reports from foreign media, a recent investment platform, HelloPublic.com, has upgraded its domain to Public.com. Public.com is a high-quality domain that has been owned by Anything.com for many years. Between 2018 and 2019, it appears that the domain was sold for an undisclosed amount, and the buyer turned out to be a company named Public. The company initially started with a non-branded two-word domain, HelloPublic.com.
Why did Public decide to acquire the brand-matching domain Public.com? One might speculate that this was to enhance marketability and/or convey trust to customers and clients. We no longer need to speculate on the reasons. Jannick Malling, co-founder and co-CEO of Public, shared his reasons for acquiring Public.com in response to Greg Isenberg's tweet about the benefits of acquiring premium .com domains:
"I ran a little experiment that I want to tell you about...
I used to think buying a premium dotcom domains were a waste of cash.
I’d hear stories of people spending $500k on a dotcom domain and would silently laugh to myself.
If only you spent that money on paid ads, viral videos, etc. That 500k might be 100k customers!
You're just lighting the cash on fire for ego.
But I was wrong... I recently started actually acquiring some dope domains.
So, I ran an experiment.
What if I took the same product and slapped on a new premium dotcom domain. A dot co for a dot com.
And I started seeing the conversion rates jump 2-3x
Same EXACT product, just a new domain, more customers.
Pretty wild. But the dotcom adds trust and organic search.
And some of these domains were under $10,000, not talking just $1M domains.
Very short payback periods.
So, yeah my realization is premium domains can be totally worth it especially in B2B.
I'm starting to think about only starting companies that have premium domains...
Brand matters more than ever."
The domain Public.com was registered in April 1998, while HelloPublic.com was registered in September 2017. "Public" has the meaning of "公开" in Chinese, a commonly used word. Natural traffic is undoubtedly significant, making the domain upgrade a very wise decision.
