A couple of days ago, "HuoLaLa" made it to the trending topics on Weibo.
A netizen revealed that they were charged ¥5400 for a less than two-kilometer move with HuoLaLa while moving within Beijing. Media outlets immediately reached out to HuoLaLa's customer service, but the staff dismissed it as a "user-generated hype." This response once again sparked public dissatisfaction, resulting in a flurry of criticism. Eventually, under public pressure and to salvage their company's reputation, HuoLaLa issued a statement announcing the removal of the involved driver, the strict punishment of the customer service agent who labeled it as "user-generated hype," and compensation for the user to resolve the dispute.
Founded in 2013 by the intracity freight platform Lalamove in Hong Kong, HuoLaLa entered the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asian markets in 2014. The brand was renamed "HuoLaLa," and its operations are managed by Shenzhen HuoLaLa Technology Co., Ltd. HuoLaLa is an internet-based logistics service platform that provides intracity and intercity freight transportation services. Users can summon nearby cargo trucks through the app, and drivers can immediately accept orders and complete the transportation, making its model akin to the "freight version of DiDi."
HuoLaLa is undoubtedly one of the leading players in China's intracity freight industry. It not only boasts a significantly high user registration count but also has expanded its business to 9 countries and regions including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and India under the name Lalamove (HuoLaLa's overseas version). As its scale has grown, HuoLaLa's domain name in mainland China has also evolved accordingly.
Previously, HuoLaLa used lalamove.com and easyvan.hk as its official domain names (now the official domain for HuoLaLa's overseas version). Upon entering the domestic market, to align with the brand's name and cater to the input and memory habits of Chinese users, the domain name was upgraded to huolala.cn.
The domain name huolala.cn also carries the connotation of "spicy hot," which is widely used in daily language and encompasses a broad range of meanings. The related domain huolala.co has also been protected by HuoLaLa, but the three-character domain huolala.com, which better matches the brand, is still owned by an investor and hasn't been acquired by HuoLaLa yet.
Domain name choices in the intracity freight industry
In the intracity freight industry, HuoLaLa, KuaiGouDaChe (Fast Dog Taxi), and LanXiNiu BanJia (Blue Rhinoceros Moving) are currently three promising players. Among them, HuoLaLa has a relatively larger market share.
KuaiGouDaChe: suyun.daojia.com
KuaiGouDaChe is an intracity freight brand launched by 58 DaoJia, which was originally known as 58 SuYun. In 2017, it merged with GoGoVan and was officially renamed KuaiGouDaChe in 2018, separating from 58 Group's overall business.
KuaiGouDaChe continues to use the second-level domain suyun.daojia.com that was previously used by 58 SuYun, bearing the meaning of "fast transport." It seems to capitalize on the advantages of daojia.com's top-level domain to attract traffic, without immediately utilizing a domain name directly related to their brand. The four-character domains related to KuaiGouDaChe, such as kuaigoudache.com/.cn/.com.cn/.net, were all grabbed by domain investors even before 58 SuYun's name change. Currently, KuaiGouDaChe has not protected these domain names.
LanXiNiu BanJia: lanxiniu.com
LanXiNiu BanJia is an app developed by Beijing LanXiNiu Information Technology Co., Ltd. Its official website uses the three-character domain lanxiniu.com, registered in 2013, which directly corresponds to the brand name "LanXiNiu" and presents a well-maintained image. Additionally, lanxiniu.cn can also redirect to the official website, and lanxiniu.com.cn has been secured, showing a comprehensive domain strategy.
SuPaiDe: supaide.com
SuPaiDe belongs to Beijing SuPaiDe Logistics Information Technology Co., Ltd., an internet company focusing on urban logistics. It uses the three-character domain supaide.com as its official website. Furthermore, supaide.cn has also been protected by SuPaiDe.
YunNiao PeiSong (CloudBird Delivery): yunniao.cn
YunNiao PeiSong is operated by Beijing YunNiao Technology Co., Ltd., established in November 2014. It's an internet platform dedicated to "intracity supply chain delivery." The official website uses the two-character domain yunniao.cn. The company also holds several three-character domains.
It appears that except for KuaiGouDaChe, which benefits from the secondary brand domain of 58 DaoJia, other intracity freight brands have consistently chosen their own brand's pinyin domain names. Pinyin domains are unique in China's domain market due to the distinctive internet input and browsing habits of Chinese users. Whether it's single-character or double-character pinyin, or even the use of three-character pinyin by terminal companies, it's quite common. Pinyin domains can directly match brand names, are easy to remember, align with Chinese input habits, and provide significant assistance in brand promotion and marketing.
Currently, various companies are vying for dominance in the intracity freight sector, with HuoLaLa facing such serious negative news. It remains to be seen whether their industry status will be affected, and who will have the last laugh in this competition.
