In the third quarter of 2023, the total number of global domain names exceeded 359 million

Recently, Verisign summarized a domain report for the third quarter of 2023 (July 1 - September 30). Here are the key points:

1. The total number of domain registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs) reached 359 million, an increase of 2.7 million domain registrations or 0.8% compared to the second quarter of 2023. Year over year, domain registrations increased by 8.5 million or 2.4%.

2. The .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of 173.9 million domain registrations in the domain name base at the end of the third quarter of 2023, a decrease of 0.5 million domain registrations or 0.3% compared to the second quarter of 2023. The .com and .net TLDs had a combined decrease of 0.2 million domain registrations or 0.1% year over year. As of September 30, 2023, the .com domain name base totaled 160.8 million domain name registrations, and the .net domain name base totaled 13.2 million domain name registrations.

3. New .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 9.9 million at the end of the third quarter of 2023, compared to 9.9 million domain name registrations at the end of the third quarter of 2022.

4. Total country-code TLD (ccTLD) domain name registrations were 138.1 million at the end of the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 1.0 million domain name registrations or 0.8% compared to the second quarter of 2023. ccTLDs increased by 5.4 million domain name registrations or 4.1% year over year.

5. Total new generic TLD (ngTLD) domain name registrations were 30.2 million at the end of the third quarter of 2023, an increase of 2.1 million domain name registrations or 7.5% compared to the second quarter of 2023. ngTLDs increased by 2.9 million domain name registrations or 10.6% year over year.

The top 10 TLDs with the highest domain counts are .com, .cn, .de, .net, .uk, .org, .nl, .ru, .br, and .au.

The top 10 ccTLDs with the highest domain counts are .cn, .de, .uk, .nl, .ru, .br, .au, .fr, .eu, and .it. As of September 30, 2023, there are 308 globally authorized ccTLD suffixes, including internationalized domain names, with the top 10 ccTLDs comprising 59.2% of all ccTLD domain registrations.
