.Ai is the country code for Anguilla, popularised by artificial intelligence. It has driven a significant increase in .ai domain name registrations. According to Netcraft, the number of .ai domain names in use by web servers has grown by 12,523 per cent since 2013, from 913 domain names to 115,245 domain names. there has also been an increase in the number of IP addresses and active sites, with the number of IP addresses increasing from 165 to 37,041, and the number of active sites increasing from 647 to 112,600.
The volume of .ai domains has also skyrocketed in recent years, with prices going up one at a time. the BBC published an article discussing the rise in sales prices for select .AI domains. In 2023 alone, NameBio's publicly reported sales of .AI domains reached nearly $5 million, which is a substantial increase from previous years, which hovered in the $1 million/year range.
Back in the summer of this year it was thought that NPC.ai sold for $250,000. The highest .ai sale price to date, which interestingly, according to Matt Barrie, CEO of Escrow.com, is nowhere near the biggest sale.
Here's what Mr Barrie had to say:
"These .ai domains are being bought by startups that are ready to do AI projects as well as domain investors. Not long ago, a domain investor bought a certain .ai domain for $300,000 and then sold it a few months later for $1.5 million (about Rs. 10 million). This domain name has not been made public and I'm sure there are many more privately traded domains that have not been revealed and maybe someone will get credit for it in the future, but for now it remains a secret. Some speculators in the space are realising that companies are wanting the best AI branding."
.ai domains have sold for far from their highest prices, for example: you.ai sold for $700,000 in October and stack.ai sold for $258,000 in April. In the future, I wonder which .ai domain name will break through the highest selling price again?
