In today's everyday life, mobile phones have become indispensable tools. Whether for browsing websites or using mobile applications, domain names play a critical role. However, some people may mistakenly think that domain names are merely a string of publicly available characters and do not require special protection. It's only when a domain name is stolen that people realize that safeguarding domain name security is actually crucial for protecting network security. Let's examine a case to gain a deeper understanding of this importance.
1. Inability to Play Mobile Games Unveils a Network Gray-Area Crime
On April 4, 2023, a gamer named Xiao Jia adeptly attempted to open the mobile game they regularly played, only to find that they couldn't log into the game's server. After fruitlessly waiting, Xiao Jia reported this issue to the game operator, Company A.
(Representation of normal game operation)
Xiao Jia was not alone in experiencing this issue. On the same day, Company A received numerous complaints from players stating that they were unable to log into the game server. This game had nearly 50,000 active users, and their inability to access the game would have a significant impact on the company's revenue and reputation.
(Representation of reasons for the inability to log in)
After an urgent investigation by the company's operations center, it was discovered that the game's login domain name had been maliciously transferred, preventing it from connecting to the original game server. The login domain name used by Company A was under the account of a cloud service proxy company, Company B. After verifying with Company B, Company A learned that someone had stolen Company B's account and domain names stored with the cloud service company, and had maliciously transferred them.
2. Exploiting Vulnerabilities to Illegally Obtain Domain Names
Once in custody, Mr. Liang revealed the criminal process of domain name theft. On April 3, 2023, Mr. Liang used various tactics, including uploading forged authorization documents, to exploit technological means and gain access to Company B's account and its associated 148 domain names. The following day, Mr. Liang sold 69 of these domain names, including four that Company A was using, to others for 8,100 yuan, resulting in the disruption that prevented access to Company A's mobile game.

3. How to Protect Domain Names from Unauthorized Transfers
1. Use Strong Passwords: Ensure that you set strong passwords for your domain management accounts, comprising a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters to increase the difficulty of unauthorized access. It's also advisable to change passwords regularly.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):Many domain registrars offer 2FA options, which require additional authentication information such as a mobile verification code or identification when logging in or performing sensitive operations.
3. Regularly Verify Domain Information:Ensure that your domain registration information is up to date, including contact details and registered email addresses. Timely updates and verifications of this information help prevent unauthorized alterations to domain information.
4. Use Trusted Registrars:Choose well-known and trustworthy domain registrars as they typically provide better security measures and support. Avoid selecting obscure or inexpensive registrars.
5. Lock Your Domain:Many registrars offer domain locking services to prevent unauthorized domain transfers. Ensure that your domain is in a locked state to thwart illicit attempts at domain transfer.
6. Register Domain Protection Services:Some registrars provide additional domain protection services, such as privacy protection (Whois privacy), which conceals your personal information and reduces the risk of spam and theft.
There are various methods for protecting domain names, beyond these six. In essence, the tighter the protective measures, the safer the domain name will be.
