The .com domain suffix consists of only 26x26=676 two-letter domain extensions. Approximately a quarter of them are held by individuals in China, with many remaining unused. The data in this article is sourced from a foreign domain expert and is accurate as of June 2023. Holder information is dynamic, so domain statistics may not be entirely precise. Let's take a rough analysis of .com domains.
1. Regional Distribution:
China, second only to the United States, has the largest number of two-letter domains. According to statistics, the United States has over 300 two-letter domains, China has around 100, the United Kingdom has over 40, Canada has over 20, and Germany has around 10. As Chinese investors and end-users continue to repatriate two-letter domains from abroad, this proportion is expected to continue rising.
Currently, there are 389 two-letter domains that are already in use for websites, with a high utilization rate of 57.5%. Among the 287 two-letter domains that are not in use, over 100 are held by corresponding brand companies and are not available for sale.
2. Registration Timeline:
Registration of two-letter .com domains began in 1986, with seven domains registered in the first year. The peak registration year was 1995, with 164 domains registered. The registration of the last two-letter domain, cm.com, occurred in 2015, marking the completion of the registration of all 676 .com two-letter domains. This process spanned 29 years.
The earliest and latest registration dates for two-letter domains are as follows:
According to data from a foreign platform, the earliest registered two-letter domain is hp.com, registered by Hewlett-Packard (HP) on March 3, 1986.
The last registered two-letter domain is cm.com, and the date is indeed January 16, 2015. There's an interesting story behind this. Originally, cm.com was registered on May 20, 1997. However, due to misuse (specific details were not disclosed), it was deleted in 2013 and subsequently locked by the registry, preventing further registrations. It wasn't until the original registrant from 1997 came forward and filed a lawsuit, claiming that "the domain was stolen a few years ago," that a judge ruled in favor of returning the domain to the complainant. This is why the registration date for cm.com changed to January 16, 2015.
3. Application Industries:
Two-letter .com domains have a very broad range of meanings, so the industries for which websites are built using these domains are diverse. Aside from domains like LK.com, RL.com, and UV.com, which are used for personal websites, the remaining 389 domains are categorized based on industry standards.
