Swathe is a female domain investor who has been focusing on investing in .xyz domain names in recent years. It's reported that among the top 15 .xyz domain names traded in 2020, 12 of them were sold by her, earning her the title of ".xyz Queen." Recently, Swathe sold 9 .xyz domain names for a total of 710,000 yuan (approximately $110,000), and here are some highlights from her interview:
Q: When did you start domain name investing?
A: Swathe: I started registering domain names in March 2015. In March and April of that year, I registered about 600 "junk" domain names on GoDaddy. Later on, I began to study the strategies of other investors and learned about what makes a domain name brandable. Investing in premium domain names is key to attracting more buyers.
Q: How many domain names do you currently own?
A: Swathe: I currently own around 19,000 .xyz domain names. Except for about 100, I've been renewing all of them.
Q: You had successful domain sales in 2021. Could you share more about that?
A: Swathe: It has indeed been an incredible year. My sales in .xyz have exceeded $800,000 (about 5.1 million RMB) this year, which is a record for me.
Since 2015, I've been buying and selling .xyz domain names. I've been producing sales reports ever since. Few paid attention to this extension, and some investors tried to criticize me, but I didn't care about their opinions. I focused solely on building my portfolio.
The emergence of .XYZ domains has expanded the potential use cases for domain names. Additionally, .XYZ domains are more affordable compared to .COM domains.
Q: Recently, many blockchain companies have been purchasing .xyz domain names at high prices. Do you think there will be other industries or niche markets using .xyz in the future?
A: Swathe: Indeed, many blockchain companies are buying .xyz domain names. But I believe their uses are limitless. Aside from blockchain companies, .xyz domains will also find applications in personal websites, virtual reality, finance, real estate, and more.
Q: Metaverse, NFT, and ETH were hot keywords in 2021. Have you invested in these areas?
A: Swathe: I sold Metaverse.xyz, Ethereum.xyz, and Ether.xyz a long time ago. I generally consider investment opportunities in all industries. I don't specifically invest in domain names related to trending keywords; I focus on profitability.
Q: Have you started investing in other domain extensions?
A: Swathe: Not at the moment. I plan to use the earnings from these years to build a more solid .xyz portfolio.
Q: Have you actively promoted your domain names?
A: Swathe: I have never actively promoted nor will I. I feel that active promotion can be pushy and forceful. I can say that the future belongs to .xyz, and I will continue to invest in it.
Q: Why do you think other .xyz investors haven't been as successful?
A: Swathe: I guess some investors haven't disclosed their sales, and others might be giving up on the domain market.
We need patience in domain investment, whether it's .com or .xyz domains. We have to wait for the right time to find the right buyers. So, hold onto your valuable keyword domains, be patient, and wait for opportunities.
With the digital wave this year, the popularity of cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and the metaverse has made mainstream domains like .com, .cn, .net highly sought after, and it has also boosted interest in lesser-known extensions like .xyz and .io. It's foreseeable that the demand for premium new top-level domains with meaningful connotations in the blockchain industry will keep rising.
.XYZ domains are highly creative and versatile, leaving a strong impression on users. They have a wide range of applications and investment value. The insights from the ".xyz Queen" provide us with new perspectives on domain name investment. In the current landscape of cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and the metaverse, related domain names hold boundless opportunities!
