IBM recently won a battle for cryptocurrency domain names, securing ten domain names associated with its brand. The domain names, most of which are in the "ethereum-ibm.tld" format, include: cryptocurrencyibm.xyz, ethereum-ibm.app, ethereum-ibm.com, ethereumibm. com, ethereum-ibm.info, ethereum-ibm.net, ethereum-ibm.org, ethereum-ibm.vip, ethereum-ibm.xyz and ibmethereum.com.
The incident started with a clear message from one of the domain owners - IBM received a reply containing the phrase "grab it, take it, or leave it". Faced with this challenge, IBM decided to take action by requesting control of the domains containing its branding and cryptocurrency terminology through the cybersquatting complaint process.
Although the domains were nominally registered by six different people, IBM pointed out that they were actually under a common control. The investigation revealed that nine of the domains jumped directly to wallet pages on Coinbase's website, suggesting possible commercial intent.
Prior to filing the cybersquatting complaint, IBM sent cease and desist emails to each of the domain name registrants. However, the responses received made it clear that the domain names would be in a state of contention, prompting IBM to take cybersquatting action.
IBM's successful acquisition of these domain names will further solidify its brand presence in the cryptocurrency space and prevent potential misuse.
