The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralised domain name system on the ethereum blockchain designed to provide ethereum users with a convenient address naming service. Similar to the Domain Name System (DNS) on the Internet, ENS allows users to map long, hard-to-remember Ether addresses to easy-to-remember, human-readable domain names, such as "myname.eth". This makes sending ETH or other tokens to an Ether address easier and more intuitive without having to remember complex address strings.ENS also supports associating domain names with other information (such as IPFS hashes), opening up even more possibilities for a decentralised internet.
Real domain names can now be connected to the Ethernet Name Service for free!
Smart contracts enable Gasless DNSSEC to import domains to be used on the ENS.
The Ethernet Name Service (ENS) has implemented "Gasless DNSSEC" to make it easier for ENS to use real domain names.
ENS is a blockchain-based system that acts as a web3 username. You may be familiar with names ending in .eth. These are the original implementation of ENS and are similar to domain names for wallet addresses. Instead of remembering long wallet addresses, people can use .eth names. This is similar to how DNS-based domain names replace IP addresses.
Short numeric .eth domain names are hot right now
One could temporarily use real domain names instead of .eth domain names, but the setup (or change) could be costly as the Ether Gas fee could be as high as 0.5 ETH.
The new smart contract now eliminates the need to save large amounts of DNSSEC proofs to the Ether blockchain. Essentially, it will allow DNS records to be verified via an off-chain gateway and eliminate the Gas fee.
This means you can use your real domain name in the ENS ecosystem for free.
Domain owners will need to enable DNSSEC and add TXT records, but will no longer have to pay Gas fees.
