Recently, Nominet, the UK's domain name registry, officially launched its new DNS abuse reporting system, "CleanDNS," establishing an efficient response mechanism to combat domain name system abuse and safeguard online security. This represents a significant step in global domain name governance.

As a specialized solution for domain name abuse, CleanDNS offers a dual-channel approach, allowing users to submit reports directly through an online form or, after prior registration, through a technical interface. The system covers a wide range of abuse scenarios, including illegal content, botnets, domain hijacking, malware distribution, phishing, spam, and fraud – essentially encompassing the most common domain name violations in the current online environment.
To ensure the accuracy and professionalism of report processing, Nominet analysts will investigate and verify reported information before sending abuse notifications to domain registrars. The optimized abuse notifications will also include links to evidence, helping registrars take more efficient action and creating a closed-loop process of "reporting - verification - action."
David Carroll, Chief Customer Officer at Nominet, stated that the collaboration with the CleanDNS platform is a significant step in combating domain name abuse. By simplifying processes and centralizing resources, it will provide crucial support to registrars and the relevant communities. The system's core objective is to enhance the trustworthiness and security of the .uk domain space, creating a more reliable online environment for businesses and users.
Currently, DNS abuse has become a prominent challenge in global cybersecurity, with frequent occurrences of phishing and malware distribution threatening the healthy development of the domain industry and user rights. The launch of the CleanDNS system demonstrates Nominet's commitment to domain governance and provides a practical example for global domain name registration authorities, promoting the development of a more comprehensive abuse governance system within the industry.
