GuideWell, officially GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation, is a mutual insurance holding company primarily focused on health insurance in Florida. It was formed in 2013 through a restructuring initiated by Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield (a member company of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association). By health insurance premium income, GuideWell is the 10th largest health insurance company in the US, with health insurance sales of approximately $15 billion.
It was originally formed from Florida Hospital Service Corporation (founded in 1944, later renamed Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield) and Florida Medical Services Corporation (founded in 1946, later renamed Florida Blue Shield). The two companies merged in 1980 to form Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield, and changed their name to Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2012. In 2009, Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield acquired Florida Health Insurance Plans. In 2022, GuideWell acquired Triple-S, which operates the Blue Cross Blue Shield program in Puerto Rico.
