Textron Inc. is a global diversified American corporation.
In 1923, 22-year-old Royal Little, a Harvard graduate and veteran of World War I, founded the Special Yarns Company with US$10,000. The company grew to 19 million spindles, successfully capturing a significant portion of the US synthetic yarn market.
By 1930, Special Yarns produced 4% of the nation's rayon supply and was renamed Atlantic Rayon. With the outbreak of World War II, in 1942, Atlantic Rayon invested US$100,000 to establish the Atlantic Parachute Company to produce parachutes for airborne troops. This decision significantly impacted the future Textron Corporation, transforming the company from a yarn manufacturer into a major textile manufacturing company. Within two years of its founding, Atlantic Rayon's sales tripled, and its workforce expanded from 900 to 3,000.
