The Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTTEP), established in 1978, is the regulatory and operating entity for the oil and gas industry under the Ministry of Industry. Following its establishment, the former Natural Gas Authority of Thailand, the Petroleum Fuel Authority, and the Bangchak Refinery were merged into PTT. The PTT Board of Directors consists of 12 government-appointed ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Sippanondba Ketudat.

In 2013, the company borne all cleanup costs for the Gulf of Thailand oil spill.
