Since the official opening of registration in 2024, behind the seemingly cold registration data of the .music domain name, there is a special market behavior hidden - defensive registrations far exceed active use.
According to data released by ICANN, as of the beginning of 2025, the total number of registrations for .music has exceeded 30,000, far higher than the approximately 7,500 "active domain names" shown by the third-party statistical platform ntldstats.com. This means that most registrations have not yet completed the activation process.

.music is a top-level domain name with clear community restrictions. It is only open to authenticated musicians, music companies, labels and related practitioners. The activation of the domain name must be completed through the identity authentication system of id.music. The process is relatively strict and the threshold is correspondingly higher. This should guarantee the "high-quality usage rate" of the domain name, but the reality is that most registrations are idle.
Constantine Roussos, CEO of DotMusic Limited, is still optimistic about this: "We have more registrations than any community TLD, and no one can match it."
At present, .music is more like an "asset" that has not yet realized its potential, rather than an Internet resource that has been widely used. It has strong community attributes, clear identity thresholds and a high brand value protection mechanism, but it is still insufficient in terms of active content construction and public awareness.
In the future, whether .music can break through the shackles of passive registration and truly establish an Internet position exclusively for musicians remains to be seen.
