Spaceship is a virtual company who is a specific type of domain name service offered by Namecheap. So far, Spaceship has firmly cemented our position as the fastest-growing domain name and web services platform, with more than one million domain names under management - and that's just the beginning.
Spaceship's radically different approach is helping more and more web professionals, small businesses and entrepreneurs from around the world get online and get better.
Since ending closed beta on April 16, 2023, Spaceship has achieved many amazing milestones. From ProductHunt brand recognition to launching many innovative products and apps, it's been a busy but rewarding time.
Digging deeper into the numbers
As the fastest growing domain name and web services platform, Spaceship is well positioned to capture new insights into domain market trends. Let's take a closer look at the numbers.
Transfers and New Registrations on Spaceship
Of the 1 million domains registered on Spaceship in the past year, 29% were transfers from other hosts and 71% were new registrations. This shows that both seasoned and new domain owners are attracted to Spaceship's groundbreaking platform and simple transfer process.
Percentage of .com vs. other TLD registrations
When it comes to top-level domains (TLDs) and domain trends, .com is usually the first choice for many. It is the most well-known and trusted TLD, automatically providing credibility to any website. That's why it accounts for nearly half of all domain names registered on the Internet.
However, .com only accounts for 13% of new domain name registrations on Spaceship. This does not indicate a decline in popularity or a change in hosting industry trends, but more likely a decrease in supply. Many premium .com domains have been snapped up.
As a result, people are looking for alternatives, which brings us to our next insight.
Top 20 Top-Level Domains Registered at Spaceship
This list includes generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). gTLDs make up the majority of registrations, with .in and .co.uk nearly dominating.
.shop tops the list with 28% of all domain name registrations. Although .com is in second place, there is still a clear difference between the two, with .shop having more than twice as many registrations as .com.
This is not surprising considering how common online shopping has become. With 20.1% of retail purchases expected to be made online by 2024, it's no surprise that people are flocking to e-commerce and targeting their online stores with .shop domains.
Top 5 countries with the most domain names registered with Spaceship
So where do most of our domain name registrants come from? The United States leads the way with 21% of domain name registrations, followed by China with 11%. This is in line with broader web trends and overall domain registration statistics, which puts the US and China at the top of the list.
Top 10 gTLDs
We've looked at .shop and .com, but what about the other contenders? Anyone surfing the web should be familiar with top-level domains like .net and .org, but .sbs may not be. However, it is certainly growing in popularity, taking up 10% of all gTLD registrations and ranking third.
Launched in 2021, .sbs, which stands for sidebyside, is one of the latest web trends in gTLDs. It attracts community organizations such as nonprofits, activists, and social enterprises.
Top 10 ccTLDs
For organizations looking to gain local relevance and trust, ccTLDs are a smart move. As such, .in and .co.uk's lead is in line with current industry trends, with India and the UK being the countries with the most internet users.
It is unlikely that every TLD here will be used for domain localization. While .ai is the ccTLD for Anguilla, the majority of domain name registrations are associated with artificial intelligence companies. Similarly, .co is the ccTLD for Colombia, but is considered a great alternative to .com domains.
