According to recent reports from foreign media, Mac is set to undergo its most "thorough" transformation in a decade. Starting from 2021, Apple will transition from using Intel chips in its Macs to custom-designed ARM-based CPUs based on the A-series chipsets used in iPhones and iPads. Apple's plan for Mac computer chips based on the ARM architecture is referred to as "Kalamata," and it's considered Apple's most ambitious computer chip plan.
This decision marks a breakthrough for Apple but could be a significant blow to Intel. As early as 2005, during the era of Steve Jobs, Apple announced a partnership with Intel to release the first Mac computers with Intel processors. This choice led Intel to reap substantial profits over a considerable period.
However, in recent years, the pace of Mac upgrades has slowed down, partially due to Intel's chip advancements decelerating. This sometimes results in intervals of several years between Mac updates, causing concern among customers. Additionally, Intel has faced challenges in production capacity, and Apple attributes part of the recent decline in Mac sales to Intel. This transition is likely to result in substantial financial losses for Intel.
In the era of the internet, "speed" is a clear characteristic, where being slow can mean being left behind by peers. Apart from focusing on brand development and strategic planning, having a high-quality domain name is equally important.
Apple is currently undergoing a transformation into an internet-based enterprise and is naturally not neglecting domain names. Apple's extensive domain name assets are highly valuable. Just its official website domains, Apple.com/.cn/.com.cn, hold considerable value. A comprehensive list of Apple's domain names would likely leave anyone astonished, including domains related to "iPhone," "icloud," and more.
Apple owns a total of 821 domain names. Its official website domain, Apple.com, was registered in 1987 and is one of the oldest domains globally. Apple also owns a series of domains such as iPhone.com (acquired for around $7 million), invested $5.2 million to acquire the cloud computing domain iCloud.com, and later spent $1.5 million to acquire iCloud.net. These significant investments have given Apple control over all relevant iCloud domains.
Apple also possesses premium domains related to its brand, such as siri.com, lala.com, mac.com, and me.com. Furthermore, Apple holds significant influence in China and is adored by "Apple fans." If Apple could acquire the two-character domain pingguo.com.cn as its official website domain in China, it would align well with the language habits of Chinese users. This move could likely attract more diverse age groups, further amplifying the brand's impact.
In contrast, Intel, established in 1968 as the world's largest manufacturer of personal computer components and CPUs, holds only 192 domain names. Its official website domain, Intel.com, was registered in 1986, making it an early domain registration. Intel protects its brand by registering domains like Intel.cn/net/com.cn/cc. In 2008, it launched the two-letter domain pc.com, creating a community website for computer technology. "PC" can be interpreted as "personal computers," making it short, memorable, and aptly meaningful. In the same year, Intel purchased the domain Network.com, although it remains unused. It's speculated to potentially become a gateway website for Atom chip-based netbooks. Among its nearly 200 domain names, apart from a few with iconic brand significance, there aren't many that stand out.
Every technological revolution triggers a reshuffling of industry dynamics. The arrival of the mobile internet era primarily impacted the biggest beneficiaries of the PC era: the Wintel alliance – Microsoft and Intel.
Apple redefined the smartphone and pioneered the tablet market. This unleashed a mobile internet hurricane that struck like a tempest, causing unprecedented turmoil in the PC industry. In the face of Apple's industry disruption, traditional PC leader Intel has been under immense pressure for a long time.
Since its inception, Intel has been a technology-driven company. After Paul Otellini succeeded Andy Grove in 2005, he restructured Intel's global organization. In the 2006 fiscal year, under the pressure of its strategic realignment and competition from AMD, Intel saw a 9% decrease in sales and a 39% decrease in profits. During this period, Intel had to lay off 12,000 employees. It was also during this time that the Xscale processor division was sold.
Lacking foresight into the future of the mobile internet, non-technically oriented Otellini made what is considered the "biggest mistake in history."
Ding Haisen, CEO of the World Managers Group, reminds enterprises that domain names are the most critical internet assets in the digital age. The longer a domain name is used, the higher its recognition and value. Having a domain name that is simple, memorable, and associated with the company's brand not only aids in achieving marketing goals but also amplifies brand communication.
Apple excels in this aspect. Right from the start, Apple prioritized domain name management and protection, considering them as part of its long-term strategic development. Not only does Apple possess numerous high-quality domain names, but it also emphasizes maintaining its brand. This approach has reduced obstacles during its transformation into the internet industry. Furthermore, due to the widespread adoption of Apple's smartphones, numerous mobile applications have emerged, making Apple a trendsetter and significantly impacting the mobile internet.
From the last three years of the 2010s to the present, Intel has embarked on four transformation revolutions. It's evident that Intel is striving to revive its dominance in the PC domain during the mobile internet era. However, Intel not only needs continuous technological updates and upgrades but also requires a forward-looking strategic layout in the internet industry. A pivotal part of this upgrade is domain names, which hold a significant position in the internet industry. Finding premium domain names for brand enhancement, acquiring substantial traffic, reshaping customer retention, stimulating potential customers, and making brand promotion more efficient and effortless are all critical.
Despite immense challenges and a challenging transformation, Intel has begun making strides in the mobile internet field. Chen Rongkun, Vice President of Intel's Product Architecture Business Unit and General Manager of the China region, said, "For us, this is a marathon, not a sprint." It is hoped that Intel can withstand pressure and make the right decisions. Initiating with domain names, creating a more impactful brand platform is crucial. After all, Intel is a powerhouse enterprise. By keeping up and then leading the way, having technologically superior mobile terminal chips and executing a longer-term strategic deployment in brand enhancement, this is Intel's decisive moment.
